No cars for tall people?

Published: September 18th, 2006

Are you tall and unable to find a car that you fit in? Join the boat, because I certainly have that problem.

I am severely annoyed because I can’t seem to find a car that I fit in.

I really need help searching for a car that fits people over 6′4. The current car I have is a Saturn S-Series 1999 I believe, and holy crap does this piece suck for tall people. Everytime I shift my knee hits the steering wheel. Talk about dangerous and annoying put together in one.

Basically it seems that I can’t have any manual car, and to that one that I fit in, because my head does hit the ceiling in the saturn.

The only cars “I know” I would fit in are either huge SUV’s with horrible gas mileage, or insanely priced luxury cars.

I really wonder why there are no cars on the market for tall people at a reasonable price. It’s really horrible. I think it’s about time that some “tall people” group should be put together and petition a car specifically for tall people. And no, if you’re under 6′4 you CANNOT drive it. It would be illegal, hell if you got in you shouldn’t be able to see anything. I don’t know how they’d do that - but I want it to be specifically for tall people so you know how we feel trying to fit in your midget cars.

So I guess I’m just ranting and rambling about not finding a car I can fit in, but either way - if you know of a car that fits “WELL” for someone over 6′4 and is reasonably priced (used) $5k - $15k. Then please let me know.

I’m really dying to know. I want a new car.

You can always buy a seat that sits lower, like a racing seat. Or you could buy a convertable.

I am 6′6″ tall, 21 years old and i own a Seat Leon - very nice car to drive and no problems whatsoever! It does have sports seats (not racing seats, just the sport lower ones). I also owned a ford Focus prior to my Leon, slightly less room, but I was still able to drive it ok.

I agree wiuth you. I am Six foot five, I once owned a 1989 GMC Tracker. It was not sold in the U.S. The Tracker debuted in the U.S. in 1990 as the Geo Tracker. The one I had was a two door with a tiny fold up seat behind it that when folded up was a great place for my big dog. It was a hatch back. Any how it had more leg room than any vehicle I have found since, head room as well. I now drive a 1999 GMC Sierra 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive pick up truck. It has a little more leg room , one inch at most. I can extend my left leg all the way of coarse the right leg and the gas peddle do get tired. It gets 10 miles per gallon.

I am 6′1″, have been driving a minivan for ages - but I’m sick of polluting the environment and I want a hybrid. Don’t know if I’ll be able to find one that fits my legs and doesn’t have me hunching over to see out the window, tho. It’s a pain.

I’m 6′8″, 28 years old and drive a gas-guzzlin’ Expedition. And can’t afford the gas! But chronic back pain has me needing to sit up straight in my car. And even still my head is through the roof if i’m truly sitting up straight. My friend has an ‘02 3-Series BMW 4 Door and the seat goes all the way back to the rear seat. I have more than enough room in it! But at this point, I can’t afford to go get a B’mer either. Still waiting for that perfect car for us tall ones…

Hi, I feel your pain. I am 6′5 260lbs wtih long legs and have a hell of a time buying cars. My wife is 5′4 and I hate driving her minivan. I am currently driving a 2000 Mercedes S430. I bought it used a few years ago and yes it was a bit pricy, but after sitting in it, I new my problem was solved. I also have chronic back pain so finding the perfect position is crucial.
In my younger years I drove a Saab 9000 turbo with a manual transmission. It had lots of room too and just barely enough room to change gears without banging your knee. I have also found success driving a VW Golf, and a Honda CRX of all things. The newer Honda civic coupes are not bad either.

I purchased a 1994 Cavalier, out of necessity, to get back and fourth to school. My 1998 blazer wasn’t cutting it anymore (especially at $3.20 / gallon). I am 6′7″, and am having the toughest time trying to fit comfortably in the car. Once it is in drive, the shifter knob is imbeded in my leg. I heard of “big boy” brackets for seats in order to extend them back a few more inches, but I cannot find them for any other car than a Jeep Wrangler. HELP ME POR FAVOR!!!

6′7” 250lbs. and I’m searching for a car as well right now. I currently drive a Chevy Cavelier…and it sucks. I’ve been doing my homework and find that the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Chevrolet Impala are the most spacious mid-size sedans. If you’re looking for a truck, Dodge Ram was the best I found (space wise and gas mileage wise). If you’re looking for a jeep, Jeep Wrangler. For an SUV, Dodge Durango.

These are just ones that I’ve sat in and found comfortable. Everyone fits into cars differently, so I’d reccommend actaully going to the dealer and just sitting in different cars. Find what fits and then worry about the rest.

I am 6′-3″ and my 2007 VW Rabbit/Golf has so much legroom that I don’t need to put the seat all of the way back with plenty of headroom. I would guess it could accomodate somebody up to 6′-5.”

I have a ‘97 Ford F-150 and it fits me just fine, but the new pickup trucks are built more “aerodynamically” and have much less headroom and the windshield is too low. My head goes right to the roof of the new Toyota Tundra, huge as it is on the outside, and I have to bend over to look through the windshield of the Nissan Titan. Ironically I fit better in some tiny cars than in the new giant pickup trucks!

I am 6′9″ I currently drive a GMC 2500 truck (gas guzzler 454) I drove my son’s Mazda pick-up, a little tight and would be ok for short trips but not for long ones. I too am stumped, I tried my wife’s v70 Volvo…no go, you would think those tall Swedes would have some consideration. Honda doesn’t seem to like tall people either. I guess I also will keep looking. Good luck

6′ 6″ and looking for a new car. I’d love a Toyota, but I only fit comfortably in the Tacoma which is the size of a small country. I’m annoyed that my options are so limited. I drive a Chevy S-10 now, I like it but they don’t make them anymore. (The Silverado is too big and the Colorado is ugly.) I can’t believe I used to drive a VW Rabbit.

Guy’s you have got to all be kidding me. Am from the UK and in the past 6 years have driven Ford Mondeo’s (Taurus size), Land Rover Discovery’s and Freelanders (LR 3’s and LR2’s), BMW 3 Series, GM Astra (focus size), Ford S Max (an MPV / Van of sorts) and a Jaguar X-Type (lots of company cars).

In addition to this have been to the US and drove an Oldsmobile Alero, a Chevy Trailblazer and a Jeep Cherokee…………..now i am 6′7″ and find all of these were comfortable to drive (granted its legs a kimbo) and bare in mind nearly all of these were manual shifts (i.e include the clutch pedals).

Cant believe its as bad as you make it out

hello…i just stumbled across this site and hear that tall people have a hard time trying to fit in cars i may suggest volkswagens with manual lowering seats (no powered seats) powered seats take up room under the seats and there relatively comfortible to sit in … i know it sits a person that is 6, 4″ no problems but no sunroof … even the little golf and fit people this height !!! try it i sale VW’s for a living…

I’m 6′5″ and go about 270. I currently drive a Ford Focus because I don’t want a vehicle payment, but it is a lot better than most. Some older Accord’s have a ton of legroom, but you might have to go back a ways. The new Tundra is a good bet if you have 30-35K to spend, and if you’re really big and have 50K (certified used) or so to spend the Mercedes G-class SUV has BY FAR the most room for tall people. A custom seat and bracket is probably the way to go if you have something you like. From USA Today….

“One is 310 Motoring in Los Angeles, owned by NBA player Chris Mills, which often pulls out a car seat and builds a longer track so that it can slide back to accommodate tall drivers.”

I’m 6′6″ 36″ inseam, broad shoulders, 275lbs. Seeing out of window below rear view mirror, not banging shoulders into B pillar, and not rubbing leg against console are priorities for me. Rear legroom for passengers is a bonus in these cars/trucks: Early model Chrysler Intrepids, 99 and earlier Tahoes, 96,97 Taurus without consoles, New Honda Ridgeline, Any year Lincoln Towncar. New Dodge trucks. Toyota Sequoia. Six way power or adjustable manual seats are required as seat rake gives leg room.

My 6′4″ brother says, add Passat, Maxima, Pilot, Avalon and Impala to the list for people my size. 6′4″

The automakers are raking the windshield to improve wind resistance, thus impeding on head room and making an improper sight line. You eyes should be beneath the mirror. Also, the console fad (even in trucks) is impeding leg room.

It will only get worse as cars get smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamic.

My judgement for people taller/bigger than me (not tall skinny folks): Pre 99 Tahoe. Then try out the other cars/trucks mentioned.

Hi I am a new driver. I just got my license and for 2 days I could drive my mothers car a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. But I just had back surgery and it got rid of my hump but it also added 2 inches to my height. my legs were already camped but now I can’t even see out the front of the car. I will need a cheap vehicle like under 2000 dollars that I can fit in. I am six foot five and 180 pounds I am very thin I just need something with leg and head room. So if anyone has any suggestions please email me about a car. I have to tote around my sister to takesome stress off my mom so please help me. My email is MaxJamD@aol.com. If anyone has any suggestions please email me

I’m 6′9″, 36″ inseam, and 300lb. I’ll have to say that I feel your pain. I don’t fit in anything. Worst of all everything that I do fit in is either expensive to buy, expensive to maintain, or both.

I currently drive a 99 GMC Yukon that gets 16 hwy mpg, and a 2003 Camry XLE that has descent room.

Here is the thing, it has to be a 2002 or 2003 camry. Anything newer/older and they fit wrong. Also try the Honda Element, or Scion xB. I didn’t like the way the dash was cut in the xB (it rubbed my leg uncomfortably) but it might fit you better, and is also a manual vehicle with good mpg.

hey guys i’m 6′8″ and i have a honda element… its not the best looking car, but i fit in it great with ALOT of headroom, and a reasonable amount of legroom…

ive driven my friend’s jeep grand cherokee and i fit fairly well, and my friend’s bmw 3 series 4 door and the seats go back really far

as a side note… when your looking for a car find one with power seats… the seat can go back further than non powered seats…

I’m over 6′6″ and drive a 95 Towncar. They took all the legroom out in 98 though, but you can get an old used one cheap. Nissan Altima’s are good and anything with electric seats will help comfort will driving. In the early 90s, they changed the way the spec. out legroom and started keeping up with minimum back seat legroom. How stupid is that, the car companies are purposely preventing the car seats from going all the way back just in case somebody wants to sit behind you. The old “cab forward” chrysler design was good, but now you have to buy a high end chrysler (300 or so) to get the legroom.

I’m 6′7″ 250lbs and 53. Driving a 2003 Avalanche right but 16mpg on the highway is a downer. The truck fits but the gas price is a killer. Recently I have been shopping. At any car dealer my first comment,”if I can’t get in it comfortably there is no point”. I sat in the 3 series BMW wagon. It fits, I like it but to get in it is like getting down on the ground to get in and like pulling out of a deep hole when I get out. The price is right and so is the mpg. Nowadays I really do want to be comfortable getting in out of my vehicle. The VW beetle has great leg and side to side room. Can’t see me in it though. Accord fits, it’s too low for me. This purchase process has been impossible for me.
